You can turn anywhere into a craft space

So, when I was thinking about what I wanted my first post to be about, I was initially stumped. Do I go for something baking-related? Do I go for some crafts? Do I give more insight into my life which people probably really don’t care about all that much? Eventually I settled on a nice introductory dive into the world of crafting: your craft space. Here are some important things I have learned about creating a craft space.

  1. First of all (and this is very important), ANYWHERE can be turned into a craft space. Anywhere. Before I moved into my apartment and could have a little craft room, I used to craft on the floor and on the kitchen table and on my bed and in the garage and on a card table set up in the basement. If you just believe, you can make any flat(ish) surface a craft space.
  2. It’s never going to be the perfect space. I finally have my own craft/office room that I share with my boyfriend and I can still think of a million things I want in there to make it better looking and more efficient. The perfect craft space doesn’t really exist, but it is very possible to take what you have and make it work for you.
  3. Never assume that you aren’t going to make a mess. I am an expert on this one. Protect your work surface, protect your clothes, protect your hands. Because if you don’t you may end up with 4 different pairs of “painting leggings” and fingers stuck together with superglue and a ruined crafting table. No project is too small for messes. Seriously, trust me.
  4. Unless you are actively working on a project and plan on revisiting it very soon, clean it up. I know when you are done crafting you want to just sit back and revel in the glory of your unimaginable creativity, but honestly just take 10 minutes and put your crap away. You will thank yourself next time you want to sit down and start something new.
  5. And finally, your craft space should always be a craft project. It is true that it will never be perfect (see Tip 2 above), but it doesn't hurt to try right? If you happen to think of some new way to organize your paper punches or a new system for your stickers, just try it. What's the worst that could happen? Maybe you will just have to put them back the way they were before. It'll be okay. You can manage that. I believe in you.

And while we are on the topic of craft spaces, here is a little look into mine!

This is my crafty desk. My dad scavenged the wood for me from his previous job. It was in the garbage pile! I considered cleaning it up, but if I’m going to start this blog I might as well be honest from the start! As you can see, I have kind of disregarded my own Rule 4 by not cleaning up between projects. In the back right I have a Harry Potter themed dollhouse I'm working on and in the middle are some light switch covers I am fancying up to hopefully sell at a craft fair in November. Such mess!

Here is what you see behind my desk. A bookcase full of storage as well as some small drawer storage to hold paper, stickers etc.

And last but not least, here is what my little half of our craft room/office looks like from the door; the other desk is my boyfriend's! Its not really much space, but I've managed to turn it into something that works for me right now.

So there you have it, a little insight into what it takes to get your craft space started. It really doesn't take much! So go sit down at the kitchen table or the couch or your fancy white Instagram ready craft table and get crafting!
